When people see the phrase womanist-informed, they sometimes pause.
What does that mean?
Is it the same as feminism?
Is it only for Black women?
In our practice, womanist-informed therapy is not a trend or a buzzword. It’s a foundation.
The term womanist was coined by writer and activist Alice Walker to describe a framework centered on the lived experiences, strength, and wholeness of Black women. Womanism recognizes that healing does not happen in isolation. Our identities, culture, families, faith, history, and systemic experiences shape how we move through the world — and how we experience trauma.
Traditional therapy models often focus on symptoms:
Anxiety. Depression. Trauma responses.
Womanist-informed therapy asks a deeper question: What has shaped you?
It acknowledges:
• Racialized stress and systemic oppression
• The pressure to be strong
• Intergenerational survival patterns
• Cultural expectations around caregiving and self-sacrifice
• The ways resilience can coexist with exhaustion
This lens is especially powerful for Black women and women of color, whose experiences have historically been minimized, misunderstood, or pathologized in mental health spaces.
As a trauma-informed practice, we focus on helping clients process painful experiences at the nervous system level; not just intellectually.
When this work is grounded in womanist principles, we also explore:
• How identity was impacted by trauma
• How survival strategies developed
• How community, faith, or cultural values can be integrated into healing
• How to move toward wholeness, not just symptom relief
This approach is both evidence-based and culturally grounded.
While womanism centers the experiences of Black women, the core principles : intersectionality, community, identity awareness, and holistic healing , benefit anyone who wants therapy that considers the full context of their life.
At its heart, womanist-informed therapy is about this:
Your story makes sense.
Your resilience has a history.
And your healing deserves to account for all of you.
If you’re looking for trauma-focused therapy that honors both your strength and your softness, this approach may resonate with you.
