EMDR Therapy

Gwinnett County, Lawrenceville, Duluth, Suwannee, Atlanta, Georgia and surrounding areas

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing memories. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds to engage both sides of the brain. This mimics the natural processes that occur during REM sleep, when the brain works to sort and store memories.

Originally, bilateral stimulation involved following a therapist’s fingers or a light back and forth with the eyes. Today, it can also include holding pulsating devices, wearing headphones with alternating tones, or tapping your shoulders or knees.

This process helps “unstick” memories that are trapped in the brain due to trauma or emotional overwhelm. As the memories are reprocessed, they become less distressing and no longer trigger the same emotional or physical responses. Many people find they gain new insight into long-held beliefs or patterns and begin to feel more at peace in their daily lives.

What can EMDR help with?

EMDR therapy was initially developed to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but its benefits extend far beyond trauma-related conditions. Research has shown EMDR to be effective in supporting individuals facing a variety of emotional and psychological concerns, including:

  • Complex or long-term-trauma (C-PTSD)
  • Anxiety and panic symptoms
  • Fears and phobias
  • Chronic stress and burnout
  • Mood and personality-related challenges
  • Complicated grief and loss
  • Dissociation and feeling emotionally disconnected
  • Intrusive or upsetting memories
  • Chronic pain and somatic distress
  • Performance blocks (I.e. work, sports, or creative fields)
  • Sexual and/or Physical Abuse
  • Body image issues

Is EMDR Therapy Right for Me?

While EMDR is most often known for treating trauma, it can help much more than that. EMDR can be used on all age groups for a wide range of challenges.

You might find EMDR to be a good fit if:

✔ Feeling stuck — You’re unsure how to move forward
✔ Relationship struggles — Past experiences still impact your relationships or self-image
✔ Overwhelming emotions — You often feel emotions are too intense to manage
✔ Triggered responses — Certain people, places, or situations easily set you off
✔ Overreaction or shutdown — You react in ways that feel out of proportion
✔ Perfectionism — You rely on perfectionism or over-control to cope
✔ Negative self-talk — Constantly criticizing yourself or feeling “not enough”
✔ Memory avoidance — You avoid painful memories because they feel too intense
✔ Intrusive memories — Old memories replay with strong emotions

✔ Dysfunctional  beliefs — You “know better” logically but can’t shake negative beliefs about yourself

Even if you’re not sure whether what you’ve experienced is categorized as trauma, EMDR can still be helpful. If you find that your reactions feel too intense for the situation, or you carry beliefs about yourself that don’t align with what you logically know to be true, EMDR may be a powerful tool to support your healing.
